Mike and I had a lovely Labor Day weekend! It somehow became a tiki themed weekend and that's just fine by me. I was reading my "Tiki Modern" book Saturday afternoon and thinking about going to see the "In Search ofTiki" exhibit at Forest Lawn Museum when Mike suggested that we take a drive to visit Bahooka in Rosemead. A new tiki experience, of course I'm up for that!
Every booth in this maze of bamboo, fish nets and tikis is surrounded by fish tanks. Big fish, little fish, carrot-eating-movie-star fish* and biting turtles make this restaurant worth a tour as you wait for your food. Can you say "kitsch?" I enjoyed every moment of my Bahooka visit but I must warn you that it wasn't for the food. I found it neccesary to stop at Tiki Ti for a Ray's Mistake before calling the Tiki evening complete.
Our next Tiki adventure took place on Sunday night at the Mission Tiki drive-in movie theater. Mike and I have been meaning to see quite a few movies in the past few weeks but just haven't made it to the theater. So while we were deciding which movie to see (Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, Mama Mia! or Man On Wire), Mike checked the showings for the drive-in and they were having a double feature of Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder. Fantastic! It's about an hour drive away so we hopped to it! We ran around the apartment feeding Lucy, popping popcorn, gathering pillows and blankets then headed out to Montclaire in my Toyota Scion. The car worked perfectly for this purpose. We put the seat backs down, made a cozy bed and opened the hatch. We enjoyed both movies.
That's where our tiki adventures ended but other highlights of the weekend included:
- making coconut banana ice cream in our new ice cream maker (thank you Joanna!)
- making the famous NY Times Chocolate Chip Cookies - I was hoping they would top Mike's wheat flour cookies so I could reclaim my territory but I don't think they did. Mike's cookies may be unreliable but when they turn out right, they're the BEST. But, tonight, I was told by a co-worker that they were worth every calorie so that's nice.
- Enjoying Labor Day with Rayna & Jamie
